4 Due To The Use Of Engine Oil That Is Too Dilute

4 Due To The Use Of Engine Oil That Is Too Dilute. Engine oil is one thing that is considered in terms of vehicle engine maintenance, when we change vehicle engine oil we generally follow the manufacturer's recommendations. But, out there there are so many aftermarket oil brands that offer higher performance. that's what triggers us to use engine oil outside the manufacturer's recommendations.

However, what happens if the oil we choose for a vehicle engine turns out to be more runny? what is the effect on the engine? We will discuss this in this article.

Effect of Oil Viscosity on the Machine

Although viscosity seems trivial but has an impact on the movement of each machine component, for example when we stir a spoon in two vessels containing water and cooking oil.

Which is lighter? clear water because water is more watery than oil. Engine oil too, more thick oil will more inhibit the movement of engine components than oil that is more runny.

Does that mean runny oil is better?

Not like that too, because both oil that is runny or thick has the same designation. So we need to see the type of engine first.

For large capacity engines generally have wide component gaps, making it suitable for using thicker oil. While for today's machines that have very narrow gaps, they require runny oil to reach the smallest engine gap.

So if your car or motorcycle is still classified as a new generation, you can use oil with a thickness of 10W. But if your car or motorcycle is an old car (or a car over 5 years old) you are better off using thicker oil.

Then What Is the Result If Using Oil Is Too Dilute?
The use of oil that is too runny from the standard will have an effect;

1. The engine sound is rougher

When you use a thinner engine oil, the engine sound will be more rough. This is because even though dilute oil is good for lubricating very narrow gaps but when lubricating larger gaps it becomes less than optimal.

So that the attenuation of the friction becomes reduced. This is what triggers the engine to make a noise that is more noisy or less smooth than usual.

2. Volatile oil

Engine oil which is also basically liquid can also evaporate, engine oil evaporation is triggered due to the heat of the engine itself. For thick engine oil, evaporation can be more restrained because the molecules are more bound.

However, for oil that is more runny, it has a lower temperature limit so it is easy to evaporate if the cooling system is not designed for runny oil.

So you will often find events where oil volume is often lacking even though there are no symptoms of oil leaking.

3. Machine durability decreases

Durability or durability of the engine will also decrease if the oil used is too runny. This is because dilute oil is less optimal in terms of lubrication in areas with large contact.

So that the wear of engine components is even faster.

4. Emissions get worse

For machines that are old, generally the gap in the piston ring has slightly enlarged. When you use runny oil, this oil will easily enter the combustion chamber. So that the oil will burn in the combustion chamber and leave worse emissions.

However, runny oil also gives a positive effect that is quite good, which can ease the pull of the engine. This is like the case of water and oil above, where objects will be lighter moving in liquids with low viscosity.

So it's better to choose runny oil or thick oil?

Dilute the thickness of the oil actually follows the condition of the vehicle engine, so don't look at the oil but look at your vehicle's engine. if indeed your vehicle is classified as a new production (around 2010 and above), generally it already has a high level of precision which the oil also needs dilute oil (around 10W-40).

But for the machines produced under the year 2010, you better use oil with a minimum thickness of 20W-50.
